A brief history of Saint Paul's Church.

- February 29, 1852, Saint Paul's German Reformed Church was formed.
- June 3, 1894, Saint Paul's second building was dedicated.
- June 1, 1900 the union between the Zion Reformed (parent) church was dissolved.
- March 9, 1930, the newly rebuilt Saint Paul's church was dedicated.
- 1934, after the merger of the Reformed Church and the Evangelical Synod of North America, Saint Paul's name was changed to Saint Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church.
- 1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational and Christian Church emerged forming one denomination - the United Church of Christ.  After much deliberation, the congregation accepted the name of the Saint Paul's United Church of Christ in 1963.
- February 2, 2000, again after much deliberation and prayerful consideration, the affiliation with the United Church of Christ was dissolved, and we are currently Saint Paul's Church, Quarryville.
- January 11, 2004, Pastor Bruce Hankee's last day (after 21 years).
- March 2005, we welcome our new Senior Pastor Ed Saul.

ST. PAUL'S CHURCH, QUARRYVILLE
  BASIC DOCTRINE / ESSENTIAL BELIEFS

What We Believe

ABOUT GOD
We believe in the tri-unity of God.  One God, sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Genesis 1:1, 26, 27, 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19; I Peter 1:2;  2 Corinthians 13:14;  Galatians 1:1;  John 3:34-35; Romans 8:11

ABOUT MAN
We believe that the first man, Adam, created in the image of God, sinned.  Man thereby incurred not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God. Consequently, all human beings are born with a sinful nature because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

Genesis 1:26, 27; Psalm 8:3-6, 51:5; Isaiah 53:6a, 59:1,2; Romans 3:23, 5:12

ABOUT ETERNITY
Man was created to exist forever.  He will exist eternally either in Heaven or Hell. Heaven is the place of eternal  happiness for all who accept by faith the merits of Christ's atoning sacrifice. Hell is the place of eternal  torment for all who reject Christ.

John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:10-15; I John 2:25, 5:11-12; Matthew 25:31-46; John 14:1-6; Philippians 3:20; Psalm 9:17; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

ABOUT JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man. Because of our sin and estrangement from God, Jesus took on flesh, was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He became like us in all things apart from sin. He died on the cross to atone for our sin and to reconcile us to God and on the third day rose bodily from the dead.  He is the sole head of the church, the Lord and Savior of those who receive Him.  He will come again to earth – physically, visibly, and bodily – to judge the living and the dead, and to consummate the eternal plan of God.

Matthew 1:22-23, 24:40-44; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6; John 1:1-5, 3:16, 11:25-26, 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15, 7:23-24; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4; Romans 1:3, 4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14, 15; Titus 2:13; Ephesians 1:4, 22-23, 5:23-25; Philippians 2:6-8; Luke 2:11; Colossians 1:16-17; 1 Peter 2:6, 3:15; 2 Peter 1:4; 2 Corinthians 5:19-21; I Thessalonians 5:1, 2, 4; Jude 14; Acts 1:9-11; Revelation 1:7, 19:11-16, 22:20

ABOUT SALVATION
Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin's penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into their life by faith. The Good News is that we are saved by the grace of God alone, the grace revealed and fulfilled in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is received only by faith. Yet this faith does not remain alone but gives rise to works of piety, mercy, and justice.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8,9; John 1:12, 14:6; Titus 2:14, 3:5; Galatians 3:26;  Romans 5:1; 2 Timothy 1:9; Acts 4:12; I Peter 1:13-25; John 10:11, 18

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit has come to glorify Christ and apply the saving work of Christ to our hearts.  He convicts us of sin and draws us to the Savior.  Indwelling our hearts when we accept Christ as Savior, He gives new life to us, empowers us and imparts gifts for service. He instructs and guides us into all truth and seals us for the day of redemption.

2 Corinthians 3:17; John 3:5, 6, 34, 7:37-39, 14:16-18, 26, 15:26, 16:7-13, ; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13, 2:19-22; Galatians 5:22-25; Romans 8:14; Titus 3:5-6

ABOUT THE BIBLE
The Bible is God's Word given to man through the Holy Spirit.  The Bible is the infallible, final authority for Christian beliefs and living.  All other sources of knowing stand under judgment of the Word of God. We affirm that the central content of the Scriptures is the Gospel of reconciliation and redemption through the atoning sacrifice of Christ and his glorious resurrection from the grave.

2 Timothy 1:13,  3:16; Isaiah 40:6-8, 55:10,11;  I Corinthians 2:9-16; 2 Peter 1:19-21; Psalm 12:6, 119:105, 160; Romans 8:19-22, 15:4-6; Matthew 5:17-19; Proverbs 30:5; 2 Corinthians 5:14-21; Colossians 1:20-22; I John 4:10; Galatians 3:13; Ephesians 1:7, 2:13

ABOUT THE CHURCH
The Church consists of all those who trust Jesus as Savior and follow Him as Lord. The Church finds her visible, yet imperfect, expression in local congregations, where together believers engage in worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and mission. In worship, we bring our whole-hearted devotion to the Lord God.  In fellowship, we live out our deep commitment to love one another. In discipleship, we follow the call of the Lord Jesus to obey and to teach all things commanded by Him.  In ministry, we identify and offer our God-given gifts and talents for God's glory.  In mission, we proclaim the Gospel to all people and minister to human need as Jesus did.

Matthew 5:13-16, 18:15-35, 20:26-28, 28:20; John 1:12-13; Acts 2:41-47; 2 Corinthians 2:5-11; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:19, 22; Philippians 2:2-16; Colossians 1:18; 2 Timothy 2:2;  Hebrews 10:24, 25;  I John 3:16-19
