Solanco Food Bank
Mission:
The Solanco Food Bank is a joint ministry between the Solanco Ministerium and the Community Action Program (CAP) of Lancaster County. The food bank serves needy families of 14 townships in southern Lancaster
County. In an average month, approximately 35 families are provided with emergency groceries adequate to fill their needs for six days.
Access:
If a family needs to use the food bank, it must contact the outreach workers at the CAP office in Quarryville. The workers will assess the situation and determine if the family is eligible under federal
guidelines and will register them. Guidelines suggest that a family can utilize the food bank once every three months. However, in an emergency and if circumstances can be verified, no family in need will
be denied food.
History:
The food bank has been housed in the basement of St Paul's Church for approximately 17 years. It is staffed by 75 volunteers from 17 different congregations in the southern part of the county. It is open
Monday through Friday from 3:00 until 4:30 PM. A total of 32 local churches as well as other community groups, schools, youth groups, and individuals donate groceries and sponsor food drives. The food
bank is also eligible to receive government food from warehouses in Lancaster.
